One of the most challenging things about changing your look is changing your outlook.
"It's very easy to see yourself in a certain way, and it's hard to step outside of yourself and see what's special about you," says Holly Getty, a New York-based style consultant who, after a career working for top companies like J. Crew and Bergdorf Goodman, has worked with men and women across the country to help develop their own personal styles.
Getty recommends breaking away from your preconceived notions of what you can and cannot wear. You're exploring new image possibilities, so it's time to look at all the style changes you could experience. "Go into a store you have always wanted to visit, but are maybe intimidated by or think isn't for you," she recommends. "If you love Valentino, go into the store."
Style isn't just about what you see in the window, it's about how you and others respond to what you wear. By simply going into a new store and being willing to try something different on, you'll gain a better understanding of and appreciation for your own body and unique sense of style.
